Long before the appearance of wax, patterned loincloths were already produced here in Africa. Resulting from the traditional techniques of natural dyes, these loincloths were considered as privileges. Intended for categories of people or for specific occasions such as religious ceremonies or wedding organization, these loincloths were mainly worn by women and were most often found among Vodun priestesses and dignitaries. Despite competition from chemical dyes, which allow savings and access to a wider range of colors, ancestral dyeing techniques, such as indigo, are maintained in particular thanks to the work of various creators.
