A real must in the city of Cotonou, the Dantokpa market opens at the foot of the new bridge and on the edge of the Cotonou lagoon. It is the perfect place to take in the crowds, if you dare to venture there! Originally, TOKPA, which means “on the edge of the lagoon”, was born in the 1940s. It was in 1963 that the market adopted a new name: “DANTOKPA”, due to the existence of the deity DAN (deity of prosperity and traders) dedicated to the lake and whose temple is located on the new bank which hosts the market.
DANTOKPA now occupies more than 18 hectares and has more than 17,000 formal and informal shops welcoming more than one million buyers per day.
